Director of the Department of Legal Culture "Giovanni Tarello" at the University of Genoa, he is professor of philosophy of law, theory of interpretation and general theory of law. Co-founder and director of legal philosophical journals such as: Ragion Pratica, e Analisi e diritto; Professor Guastini has been a visiting professor at the University Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona), Cardozo School of Law (New York), the University of Paris X - Nanterre, and Institut des Hautes Études Internationales (Paris). He is the author of: Dalle fonti alle norme (1992); Le fonti del diritto e l'interpretazione (1993), Teoria e dogmatica delle fonti (1998); L'interpretazione dei documenti normativi (2004); and Nuovi studi sull'interpretazione (2009). He has also participated in the book Un diálogo con la teoría del derecho de Eugenio Bulygin (2007) published in the Marcial Pons' Philosophy and Law collection.
