Located midway between the sea and the mountains, Girona boasts a privileged position. It has all the charm of a large city but without the crowds; a very "human-sized" city that will leave you walking around awestruck from enjoying its streets and monuments, among which you will find:
The Call or Jewish Quarter
Inside the winding medieval streets you will find El call, Girona's Jewish district, where a small Jewish community used to live up until the fifteenth century. It is one of the most well preserved medieval sites in Europe where you will find the Bonastruc ça Porta centre, the institute for Jewish studies built around the old synagogue, to the north of which stands the Montjuïc or Jewish mountain.
The Cathedral
Built in different styles; Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque (11th - 17th century a.d.) it preserves the nave with the widest arch span in the world. It is the second widest cathedral in the world after Saint Peter's Basilica in Vatican City.
Arabic Baths
The tour around the old town can be finished at the Passeig Arqueològic, with its towers Júlia and Cornèlia; and the Arabic baths at the end of the walkway which are characterized by their dome and lantern above.
Houses on the Onyar river
A typcal sight of Girona are the houses along the Onyar river. Built throughout centuries on the sides of the river, theses charming houses offer a magnificent view of a Mediterranean city. Their façades owe their colour palette to the Girona's Painter Narcís Comadira.
Bridges over the Onyar River
One of the main problems for Girona, throughout its History, was the need to connect the two sides of the city which were divided by the Onyar river: the east side (old quarter) and the west side (Mercadal district). For this reason bridges played a key roll in the development of the city. Nowadays the old medieval bridges have been substituted by contemporary constructions. We can highlight four among them that stand out: the stone bridge, the iron bridge, the Gómez bridge and the railway bridge.
