Professor of Public Law and Philosophy of Law at the Christian-Albrechts University of Kiel, in Germany. He studied law and philosophy in Göttingen. He received his PhD in 1976 with the dissertation A Theory of Legal Argumentation, for which he received an award from the Academy of Historical Studies of Science at Göttingen. Professor Alexy is a member of the society of science "Joachim Jungius of Hamburg" and was president of the German Section of the International Association for Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy (IVR). He has taught courses and given lectures in several European and American universities. He is the author of: A Theory of Legal Argumentation. The Theory of Rational Discourse as Theory of Legal Justification, A Theory of constitutional rights, The Argument from Injustice: A Reply to Legal Positivism. His works has been translated into over a dozen languages. He has published: El concepto y la naturaleza del Derecho and Una discusión sobre la teoría del Derecho in the Marcial Pons' "Philosophy and Law" collection.
